Dracula: Origins

Things have been pretty busy on my end but I'm back and eager to talk about games again!  And I'm actually starting off with a game that I'm honestly a little torn about:  Dracula Origin.  I've actually started to write a post about it four times now, each time stopping about midway and deleting it altogether.

Whitless Letter to L4D Team

So this is more an apology to everyone forced to play zombie games with me.  Because I actually love this game.  But just because I love it doesn't mean I'm any good. Special thanks to Dan the video Ninja, Doctor Holocaust, Lyf Stolte for their fun footage and the various others who play with me. Enjoy!

Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper

Steam was having some Halloween sales and so I ended up picking up a couple of games for $5, adventure games that I would normally pass over but hey, for $5 why not try them out?  The first one I bought for the title alone:  Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper.  That's right.  I was actually expecting to pull this game apart, but surprisingly, it's an extremely enjoyable adventure and a well done game overall.

Whitless Letters to- Sonic

Life has been insane with my show, and I mean to update this blog soon as there have been a couple of games I've been partaking in.  But in the meantime, enjoy the new Whitless letter :)

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey

Well, I’ve talked about the Longest Journey, it only makes sense that I talk about its sequel, Dreamfall.  In the adventure community, this had to be one of the most highly anticipated games of recent memory.  It took seven years to complete due to some development hell and the longer the fans waited the more their expectations grew.  Unfortunately, as with all over-hyped games, those expectations were not met and the game did not do nearly as well as it was expected to.  However that doesn’t mean it was a bad game.

Dark Fall 3: Lost Souls

Well, my favourite time is almost upon us: HALLOWEEN!  And what better way to celebrate than to play the oh so spooky Dark Fall 3: Lost Souls.  And it's scary.  Very scary.  So scary that I can't play it by myself.  Okay, that goes for pretty much all scary games but this has to be one of the worst for sending me into fits of hyperventilation.

The Longest Journey

It’s time to go old school again!  And this time I’ll be visiting one of my all time favourites, The Longest Journey.  If you’ve been following this blog, you probably know that my love for TLJ knows no bounds.  It’s made every Top 5 list and it’s mentioned at least once in almost every post.  So I finally indulged my nostalgia craving and re-installed it on my computer to see how well it holds up today as a game.  And the answer is:  still pretty damn well.

More Video Times!

Well, it wouldn't be my blog if I didn't shamelessly push my little video projects on people.  Here's the latest!  My letter to the straight block from Tetris.  Enjoy, share, like, comment, every little bit helps!

King's Quest III Redux

This blog is being typed in my new digs!  Hello internet world!  I missed you!  And what better way to celebrate my newly returned internet and always impoverished state than to download a free King's Quest remake from AGD interactive?

Well, since I've posted it everywhere else, it's time to post it here.

Titanic: Adventure Out of Time

Well folks, my apartment is filled with boxes and I’ve been going through all my old stuff preparing for my move, so it’s time to go nostalgic again!  Today I’ll be talking about a little known game called “Titanic: Adventure Out of Time”, one that I had a blast playing as a kid and still holds up pretty well today as a graphic adventure game.

A Letter to Bowser

As a sort of project to get myself in front of a camera more (hot damn they make me freeze up) and to cement my nerdiness straight to the core of the earth, I've created a sort of vlog series in which I write letters to video game characters.  Observe:

Special thanks to Dan Charrington for helping it happen.  Hopefully there will be more to come after this!

Top 6 Adventure Game Heroes

In case I haven't made it abundantly clear, I love villains.  They always seem to be the more interesting characters in movies, books, games, you name it.  But they wouldn't be much without a hero to challenge them.  The hero characters of the gaming world are a difficult bunch to write for.  Unlike movies, you'll be following game characters around from anywhere between seven and sixty hours.  If they're too dull, the game becomes dull.  If they're too emo, you'll turn the volume off just to escape their whining.

Every once in a while, a protagonist comes along that is not only interesting but sometimes even more delightful than the villain and it's important to give props to them.  These are my personal favourite heroes of adventure gaming.  And since we're talking about characters you play as, this will be the first Top 6 list without a Myst title!  Woah! (although I am my most favourite hero)  Warning: some spoilers will follow.

Hey everyone! I was at a convention last weekend. It was amazing. Instead of typing stuff out, here is a vlog I did with my friend's Dan and Jen. Their links are in the youtube link!

Alternativa

I've written about a number of games by now on this blog, many of them being either nostalgic fun, a new shiny adventure, or a Top 10 list no one agrees with.  So it's with great pleasure that I'm able to talk about a pretty mediocre adventure game: Alternativa.  Warning: spoilers are present for this game you probably won't play.

Guide to Survival Horrors

No games lately, but I'm in a typing mood, so I present:

Manda's Guide to Playing a Survival Horror game:

  1. Look for an adventure game.  Find you've played them all.  Out of sheer boredom pick up the one other game you have that requires a gun.
  2. Turn out all the lights for atmosphere.
  3. Go to menu screen.  Immediately get intimidated by just the screen.
  4. Start game.  Spend as much time as possible in the beginning level where you can look at the pretty village/training grounds/abandoned city and be content with this existence.
  5. Do this until the game grows weary of your wimpy ways and almost physically push your controller hands to just freakin' get a move on already.
  6. Turn back on the lights.
  7. Pick up weapon.  Button mash your way to figure out how on earth it works.  Then try to figure out which button mash combination actually made it shoot.
  8. Shout in joy when you make it shoot.  Feel somewhat like a caveman discovering fire.  Shoot the wall in glee before you realize that bullets are a finite resource.  Oops.
  9. Tell stupid scary music to stop playing.  Realize that music cannot hear you over it's own scariness.
  10. Physically jump off the couch when something grumbles and roars in the distance.  Hope no one saw.
  11. Prepare yourself to walk around the corner, guns blazing, and be the totally most badass crazy zombie killer there ever was.
  12. Scream instead. Flail your arms even though that doesn't make the controls work better.  Shoot the wall.  Shoot the ceiling.  Shoot your own blood stains.  Never ever hit the zombie.
  13. Watch yourself die in a bloody bloody mess.
  14. Quit game.  Call your survival horror gaming friend.  Have him play it while you cower in a corner and give "advice" mostly consisting of "DON'T GO IN THAT ROOM!"
  15. Go to bed.  Never sleep.

Back to the Future- The Game

I always see and hear a lot of talk that point and click adventures are dead.  But really, they’ve been clinging on for years and in the last couple of years they’ve actually been making a bit of a comeback, finding a way to survive in the modern gaming world.  There are a number of factors in this, a couple of which are the Wii’s contributions and the emergence of casual gaming which give a watered down adventure game feel.

The other popular form that’s emerging though is the episodic adventure game. One of the more recent is Back to the Future Season 1, which I got the chance to download thanks to some sales on Steam.  It’s certainly not the first of its kind.  It comes from Telltale games, makers of other great episodic franchises such as Sam and Max and Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People.

Top 5 Adventure Game Villains

Well, I haven't had much time to devote to games lately what with life stuff going on and despite feeling nostalgic, I haven't had a chance to replay any of my favourite games in the hopes of talking about them.  So for now...another list!  Lists are awesome and you know it.

Ghostbusters

Normally this is where the obligatory "Who you gonna call" joke would be made, but I am better than that even though just mentioning the joke is kind of the same as making the joke itself.  Oh well.  Ghostbusters marks another incomplete game for me.  It's the risk you run with rentals, there is sometimes not nearly enough time to finish it all.  But it's not for lack of wanting.

I freakin' love Ghostbusters.  I loved them as a kid.  I love them now.  I had the crazy toys that morphed into weird things, i watched the cartoons, I have the special edition DVD's, and a lot of my comedic inspiration comes from that movie.  So when I saw that not only was there a new Ghostbusters video game, but that it was written and voiced by the original creators and cast, I was pretty stoked.

Portal 2

HEEEEEEEEE hehehehehehe.  WHEATLY!

Okay, so I will be joining the multitudes of people wanting to talk about Portal 2.  Yes, many people will talk about and it and post videos and do playthroughs and throwing my two cents in about the game seems kind of redundant but dammit!  The game is finished and I want to talk!  Now, I don't normally announce my biases when it comes to reviews but...wait...yes I do.  All the time.

CSI: Fatal Conspiracy

YEESS, I still watch this show on occasion.  And YES, I have played more than one of these games.  I don't know what it is, I just like mysteries, cheesy mysteries with one-liners that no one in their right mind would say in real life.  Especially ones involving some of the most inaccurate portrayals of crime scene investigation the world has ever seen.  It's pretty much like eating McDonald's.  You know it's bad, but you can't help but order the supersize fries when you see them.

Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within

Strangely enough, up until now I’ve never played Gabriel Knight 2: The Beat Within.  Part of that was its availability in no adventure games allowed Sarnia, part of it was my family computer’s inability to process anything not on a floppy disc, but after that it was this weird trepidation I developed when contemplating playing the game.  Even when I bought the trilogy online, I played the first and the third, but left the second to sit on my harddrive.  Which I shouldn’t have…because it’s a damn good game.  Warning!  I do discuss a couple of spoilers, so anyone wanting to play it for themselves should do that first.  I figure this is old school enough that most people have played it.

Because I was bored, that's why.

To help distract me from the fun times of playing a pregnant crack addict, I did a couple of things.  One was to start this blog.  The other was to take my camera shy self and make this goofy youtube project with a couple of friends to make fun of my love of Myst and my inability to handle coffee.  Enjoy!...and be kind...

Thanks again to Mr. Charrington and Ms. Wynne for all their help and awesomeness and suggestions.  I am very slowly learning the intricacies of hamming it up for a camera.  Maybe next time I'll actually write more of a script.  Fun fact:  I still don't know how to make coffee.

Top 10 Soundtracks

In about a week I’m going to be going to Video Games Live.  For those of you who don’t know, Video Games Live is a concert that performs famous video game music.  You can look at it here.  I am extremely EXTREMELY pumped for this.  Not only am I a lover of games, but also of soundtracks in general.  It’s what most of my music collection is comprised of.  And lest you think that the music being played here is Mario music, think again.  Game music has come a long way from the original 8-bit glory, and now often requires full orchestras to perform them.

So while I wait in insane anticipation, I figure I’d do a Top 10 (10!) list of memorable music pieces from the games I love.  Sure, I could do my favourite full soundtracks in general, but there are those songs and pieces from games that I listen to over and over again and they deserve attention too.  Rules!  I will try to keep it limited to one song per game.  The song has to be in-game, so songs like "Still Alive", which were made for the game but weren't actually in the game, don't make it.  Most of these will be obscure adventure games, and there is actually no particular order to them as I just add them as I think of them, soooooo...

Something not to do with gaming at all

Sure, on the surface, this doesn't LOOK like a gaming related thing, but the main reason I started this blog was to have a distraction from the intensity (the awesome sort of intensity) from my rehearsals.  And it's my blog.  So I get to choose what goes on it, SCHMEEEEEEEEHHHH.

This is my show.  It is serious and intense and probably the most important thing I've done with my life to date.  If you check out the media section of the page you can see me, an actor, stuttering my way through an interview.  Enjoy!

Grim Fandango

Well, it’s getting down to crunch time for my show, which means that there’s about 50 million percent more stress and so I’ve been escaping to more nostalgic games to calm my nerves.  And Grim Fandango is pretty darned good at providing laughs for me in an otherwise panic stricken phase.

Heavy Rain

Not a lot of people really like Heavy Rain.  I am not one of those people.  The game is an odd and unique little number and I ate up every moment of it.  It came out last year and I played it last year, but recently I got the chance to play it again and thought hey, why not talk about it again?  Because I just can't shut-up about games I love.

Top 6 Favourite Opening Cinematics

Eh, I'll get around to doing another review eventually, I'm currently slogging my way through Ghostbusters and would rather actually attempt to finish the game before reviewing it entirely.  For now, another list!  Games have become much more cinematic in recent years.  I personally love cinematics in games.  It lets the game progress in terms of story and let's you sit back and enjoy it.  It also helps to heighten the atmosphere and emotion of the experience.  Sometimes it's one that cuts away and makes you feel like you're watching a movie, sometimes the cinematics are incorporated into the game itself.

But for me, when I'm remembering cinematics it's often the very first opening sequence that I remember the most.  And they are incredibly important.  They establish just what kind of a story and game you're about to get into, and they're often the key things that initially hook me in.  My favourite games almost all hooked me just on the opening sequence alone, whether it was because of the gorgeous graphics, epic or mysterious atmosphere, sweeping soundtrack or all three put together.  They made me want to play more to discover just what was going to happen.  So I thought I'd put up my five favourite (so far) opening cinematics that I could watch over and over again:

Top 5 Most Frustrating Moments in King's Quest 5

Well, it had to come eventually.  I love lists.  I love making things in list form.  So I figured it was time to make a Top 5 list.  Plus I haven’t really been playing games lately but still want to talk about them in some way.  Well, since I’ve been mentioning the Sierra games quite a bit in my posts, it seems only fitting:

Gray Matter

Now THIS is what I’ve been waiting for, people.  A new adventure game, not just a new one, but a good one.  Not even a good one, but a great one.  Gray Matter has the potential to become one of the next classics in gaming.  It doesn’t really introduce anything new and innovative and doesn’t hold up to Jensen’s previous Gabriel Knight series, but it’s still a damn good and polished game that that I’ve been yearning for the last couple of years.  Strap in, folks, it's going to be another long one.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers

So while I’m continuing to jones for Jane Jensen’s new game, Gray Matter, I figured I’d go all nostalgic this week and remember another great Jane Jensen game to keep the Jensen shakes at bay: Gabriel Knight Sins of the Father.

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

And now....

What's that?  Jane Jensen has created another adventure game?...REALLY?!  REALLY AND TRULY?!  AAHHHHHHHHHHHHH MUST PLAY NOW!...what's that?  you don't know who Jane Jensen is?  Well, do your research because she is one of history's greatest contributors to the gaming world!

Excuse me whilst I turn the world upside down looking where to buy this game.  In the meantime, here is the website:

Dragon Age II- Demo

Well, everyone seems to be playing Dragon Age, but alas, I am a starving actor/bookkeeper and buying new games for $50-60 is pretty much not an option for me.  Thankfully, BioWare recognizes the value of a demo and so out of curiousity I downloaded it and thought it'd be interesting to not just talk about the game itself but about demos in general and what makes a good demo.

Amnesia

I was going to do a full review of Amnesia but realized this is easier than putting my terror into words.  It's also a good example of what it's like to actually have me around while playing horror games.  Warning: Potty mouth ensues.  A lot.  Special thanks to Dan Charrington for making my debut to Youtube worthy of censorship.  For those of you who are impatient, I come in at 2:31, 3:28, and 9:35, although it's all pretty amusing to watch.

And now: Amnesia in a nutshell. (I will embed the video properly later.  For some reason Blogger wouldn't find it for me)

The Lost Crown: A Ghost-hunting Adventure

I was going to talk about another game, but I'm determined to finish it first and I was feeling nostalgic for this game so here it is!

I don't know what it is about me and scary games/movies.  More often than not you'll find me cowering in a corner at the slightest odd creak or groan that sounds and I have been known to "accidently" fall asleep with the light on after playing one.  Heck, "playing" is a fairly loose term in my case.  Mostly, it's me hiding under a blanket while making someone else fight the scary scary nightmare things.

So why oh why would I constantly subject myself to more emotional torture?  Because as I said in a previous entry, I am a story junkie and a lot of horror games have great stories.  In fact, the best horror games need good story lines because that's what keeps us opening doors to unknown horrors: we want to know the secret of the mystery.  We want to know what happens next and why it's happening.  Enter The Lost Crown: A Ghost-hunting Adventure.

Epic Mickey

The first game I'm going to talk about is one that I haven't even finished yet:  Epic Mickey.  This is going to get rambly folks, so bear with me while I figure it out  the best way to write these over the next couple of weeks.

Ahhhh, the gritty reboot.  It's become a staple of all 21st century entertainment.  And no one is in need of it more than Mickey Mouse.  To be truthful, I never even really liked Mickey as a kid.  His voice annoyed me, his damn constant upbeat attitude was just grating and I never really found him all that interesting.  In fact, he was pretty arrogant.  The Sorcerer's Apprentice was the only thing that really impressed me right up until Mickey freakin' went axe murderer over the broom who was doing nothing but following orders.

All about me

I thought I might kick things off by going into what makes a good game for me.  Obviously the things I write here will be incredibly subjective, as with any review or critique, and what makes a good game for me isn’t what makes a good game for other people (even though I’m right, mwah).
I’ve been playing games, specifically adventure games, a long time.  We’re talking double digit years here.  And in that time I’ve refined my tastes (or in other terms, I’ve gotten picky).  I may not be an expert in game design or a well established critic, but I tend to know a good game when I see one.  Like I said, I mostly play adventure games, but that doesn’t really stop me from venturing out into other genres or at least recognizing when a game does its job damn well.
So here is a list of qualifying factors I always look at in my gaming experience.  Sorry, when I say look at, I don’t just mean analyze and critique.  These are the factors that affect me most when playing and that can vastly influence my experience of the game.  And so, without further ado:
1.     Story:  Story is, beyond everything else, absolutely key when it comes to whether I’ll enjoy a game or not.  The games that keep me playing for hours on end are those games where I just have to know what happens next, where I get so invested in the characters that I care about what will happen to them.  Games like The Longest Journey, Heavy Rain, Indigo Prophecy and Silent Hill 2 all have exceptional story lines.  A lot of people today that I talk to talk about the graphics of a game.  To me, you can have a game with mediocre graphics and a great storyline but it doesn’t work the other way around.  No matter how great graphics are, if you don’t have a good storyline you don’t have nearly as good a game experience (this doesn’t include casual gaming).  Hell, I don’t play any FPS games but I’ve often watched my friends play them just because I want to know what happens, because the story is engaging.  The fact that my motor functions, trigger finger and stress levels absolutely suck is the only thing keeping me from discovering it for myself.
2.    Characters:  This ties into story, but it gets its own category.  A game can have a good story, but a good plot is only part of the story.  The other part is good characters.  This cateogory could be called “Dialogue” as well.  Having intriguing characters that you get emotionally invested in is a difficult feat to pull off.  How do you make comic relief characters funny without being too annoying?  How do you make a protagonist that doesn’t seem bland and a pawn for the plot to move forward?
3.    Voice Acting:  So let's say you're playing a fantasy adventure game.  You're on your way to your magic school (not Hogwarts) and you walk through the gorgeous landscape, ready to solve a great mystery when you happen upon a merchant on the road.  You stop to talk to him and then the bastard child of Mario and Beaker opens his mouth and you're covering your ears in agony.  Again, this could tie in with characters, but even with the most complex and engaging characters, if you don’t have a good voice to back it all up then all of that goes down the drain.  I cannot stress enough how a good voice actor can make or break a game.  Because bad voice acting?  It gets very VERY distracting.  Maybe it’s because I’m an actor myself, but I just can’t stand hearing subpar voicework in a game.  I tend to be a bit more forgiving to independent developers since smaller budgets often means wandering around the office getting your co-workers to perform the voicework, but the big budget games?  There’s never an excuse.  The above example is a character named Mustavio, and he...is...unbearable.  The rest of the voices are not so great, but they mostly veer on bland.  Mustavio is the extreme example of bad voice acting.  Luckily, the industry is getting better and better when it comes to hiring voice actors.  I'm not always a fan of getting celebrities to do voice work, because camera acting and voice acting are two different mediums, and not every celebrity (cough*Jennifer Connolly*cough) is fit to do it.  The same goes with games.  Some great examples of voice acting are The Longest Journey, Sam & Max, Grim Fandango and The Last Express just to name a few.
4.  Music and sound:  Music won't necessarily make or break a game, but it can certainly help enhance the experience.  I am a movie score junkie and this has since moved into the gaming realm as well.  The best types of gaming music can set the perfect mood without being too intrusive.  The Myst series is a good example of this, along with The Longest Journey (guess what one of my favourite games is...go on...guess), Heavy Rain, Syberia and a crapload of others.  Music plays a big part in gaming for me.  All of those boss battles in console games are made that much more epic by the kick-ass music that follows you throughout the battle.  Likewise with soundscapes, the right soundscape can really add to the experience.  Silent Hill 2 would have been a much different game without the horrifying, claustrophobic soundscape that went along with it.
5. Puzzles:  Pretty much everything in this list ties into story.  The music must reflect the story and characters, the characters have to be believable and the puzzles need to make sense to the world and story.  I love puzzles games, but I hate when puzzles don't make sense to the rest of the game.  Timed sequences and random mazes are just a couple among the many needlessly difficult puzzles that I've encountered.  Puzzles can be challenging, but making them too vague and frustrating can lead to me just leaving the game altogether.  As much as I love the Sam and Max series, some of the inventory combinations were just too strange and vague, even for that game.  Still, there are a lot of puzzles that worked well in their environment and while they were a challenge at times they were a pleasant one.

Those are the main things.  Of course, graphics have their part to play, and the prettier, the better.  And the controls should be simple or at the very least easy to adapt to.  But for the most part, those are the make or breaks with me when I'm playing games.  And now that I have that out of the way, it's time for some actual games.

It begins!

Greetings all!  Well, this is it.  My more than likely ill advised gaming blog.  It’s very likely that the only people to read this will be a couple of close friends, my dad, and my imaginary friend Teddy.  But really, this is just a place that I can rant and rave about the things I want so that I might stay sane over the next few months while I embark on what promises to be an emotionally traumatizing theatre experience (hint: that’s actually a good thing for an actor).
What to begin with though?  Primarily, I’m an adventure gamer.  And that is what I will be talking out in the majority of this blog.  Oh sure, there will be my occasional foray into the dark and crazy world of FPS games or the mysterious strategy games that remain elusive to me but for the most part it's going to be adventures.  It's what I grew up with, it's what I enjoy and it's damn well what I hope will be making a come back some day in the distant future.
These aren't going to be so much reviews as they are musings.  There's going to be no particular order, there's probably going to be a lot of retrospective, becaaaause let's face it, adventures games are a dying breed.  So yeah, we will see how things go, whether I can actually keep this up, and whether it will actually get read.  So for now...Adventuress signing off.
